alright last week proved once again how useless the internet "buzz" indicators can be, as Bourne Supremacy almost flew completely under the radar. I'm not that surprised, as a large portion of the audience was the older crowd, and it's not the type of movie that usually has a high buzz score. Now the Village is different. Horror/suspense films should register on the charts, and this one does, although only M Night Shyamalan is on the buzz index and "the Village" is not. I attribute this to the fake documentary aired on the Science Fiction chanel about the director. This is a great way to market a film, remember the Blair Witch? They've also been heavily promoting it with ads, and showed 8 minutes of the movie at the end of Unbreakable at least 2 different nights on T.V. Again the director was getting exposure as he hosted that show. People are going to see this media coverage and become interested in the movie. It doesn't hurt that it's getting pretty decent reviews, as well. Also, the other yahoo movie chart has the Village ranked at #2, which is great. Only Catwoman
beats it. It's also been in the top 5 on moviefone since at least Tuesday. I take that as a sign that it's going to be popular among teenage girls, which is a very large moviegoing demographic. Now, it doesn't have Mel Gibson as Signs did, and some people were turned off by that movie, so I don't know if it can do as well. I do think that anyone that predicts lower than 40 million is smokin' da pipe though
Lee's got it at 62 and Box Office Report has it at 58. This could be a set-up for a high line that's set a couple million above what the tracking is I suspect, but that might not deter me if it's still low enough.
